| Art-in-healthcare is seen as a service adjunct
to long term care, mental health and medicine. It is an effective attachment
in detention centers, community living associations, families with Dementia
/ Alzheimer's Disease, and addiction treatment.
Art-in-healthcare dovetails effectively with Recreation or
"Activities" programs and with a qualified art therapy program.
Art-in-healthcare is not art therapy but a hybrid of a studio art
practice - delivered in group form or on a 1:1 basis - with
the goal of pleasure for the participant.
Art-in-healthcare provides an increased sense of well being that can balance a sense
of loss. The process is more important that the product. Where
participants require therapy, art-in-healthcare must be delivered together
with trained therapists or medical personnel.
Caution -- No person, however sensitive, should deliver
this kind of work without sufficient training -- as participants in
untrained programs can be left at risk to themselves and to
their community.
Potential participants should be wary and ask for
evidence of recognized qualifications.
